Is There a Need to Calculate the Lightning Current?

Is There a Need to Calculate the Lightning Current?

This is a question faced by specialists designing circuits with the installed SDPs in the lightning protection systems. A simplified answer can be as follows: the lightning current is equally divided between the ground terminal of the building where the lightning has got and its metal utilities (cables, pipelines, etc.). However, unconsidered transient processes of a short-term lightning pulse make this approach unsuitable.

Example calculation of lightning protection for the French fries making plant in the Sverdlovsk Region

Recently, the ZANDZ Technical Center has performed a calculation of the lightning protection system for a potato products making plant. The facility's feature was a biogas plant. The task is to simultaneously protect the highest point of an anaerobic reactor and other lower located facilities nearby: a reservoir for storing by-products, a building for biogas production, and a primary settler.

Why does a picky lightning need a statistical calculation technique?

Please find below a new article by our permanent author, Prof. of ENIN E.M. Bazelyan. The article provides a thorough analysis of a probabilistic nature of the lightning path. As usual, the author considers more than a theoretical base of the lightning event. The article provides practical recommendations for designers on how to check the calculation of the lightning protection for redundancy of solutions designed in the structure.

Online Calculation of Lightning Protection and Grounding for Supports of High-Voltage Power Lines

Online Calculation of Lightning Protection and Grounding for Supports of High-Voltage Power Lines

On April 27, Dmitry Krasnoborov, the Engineer of the ZANDZ Technical Centre, conducted a webinar for the technique to calculate the grounding resistance of overhead power lines. In the webinar material, a detailed review of regulatory documents governing requirements for the grounding devices was provided, a calculation for the design and a choice of grounding materials for various soils, especially in challenging permafrost conditions, in rocky soils were considered. The webinar programme included a short presentation of special equipment for overhead power lines, i.e. short-circuit indicators, which allow to significantly reduce time on searching for an emergency section in the line. These and other materials can be seen in our webinar.

NPP Grounding in Bangladesh

The ZANDZ Technical Centre sometimes receives requests to calculate lightning protection and grounding systems for very exciting or even exotic facilities. One of such requests was aimed at providing grounding for an administrative building at NPP in Bangladesh. The customer's requirements were rather strict: to provide grounding resistance of 4 Ohm in the 10 x 10 m area and with a high-resistivity soil, 1,500 Ohm*m.

IS LIGHTNING PROTECTION NECESSARY? AN ANSWER FROM REGULATORY DOCUMENTS

IS LIGHTNING PROTECTION NECESSARY? AN ANSWER FROM REGULATORY DOCUMENTS

When designing the internal artificial lighting systems of the building and power equipment (M&E), a need for assessment of the necessity of lightning protection activities arises. The complexity of the task is that the M&E section in the building design can also include the lightning protection activities. In this case, the M&E section is usually assigned to electricians who are not specialists in the lightning effect protection. They have to evaluate the need for lightning protection. If necessary, you should contact experts in the respective area. This article has been created to assist electricians in making a correct decision in such situations.
