Such tests were started in the 30s of the past century. Air gaps 1-3 m long were used, then in the 60s they grew to 10 m, and several years ago the experiments were carried out with the length of air gaps of up to 30 m. As you see, it's an old story, and there is no task solution still. There is no unambiguous answer about the transfer rules of major experiments results to the real lightning. It's not surprising. When we talk about security of people, it is preferable to use measuring methods which had been used for dozens of years. Talking about grounding, such a method is measuring of resistance with the help of combination of amperemeter and voltmeter (recommended GOST R 50571.16-2007). Sometimes this method is called "three-wire" (or "three-clamp"). There exists its more precise modification called "four-wire" ("four-clamp") method. Short metal rods - about 3 m long, placed at the depth of not more than 0,5 m are often chosen when projecting grounding in the conditions of the Russian midland. Besides, rods of this length are enough in order to reduce the influence of freezing and drying of the ground on the grounding resistance. But in order to provide required values of grounding resistance, it is required to drive at least 3 rods into the ground. They are placed at the distance, approximately equal to the length of the rods. In the result, grounding occupies a significant area.
