Lightning protection and grounding of the Maly theatre of Russia is another project designed by ZANDZ Technical center and it was later implemented. The recent mounted object we писали, wrote about was "State Novosibirsk regional university hospital".

 

We would like to remind you, that objects of cultural heritage require the presence of a reliable lightning protection system due to a high historical and cultural value. Installation of lightning protection is much cheaper than restoration of the initial form.

Upon the order of the "State academic Maly theare of Russia" we carried out a complex of repairment and restoration works on the cultural heritage object "Tenement building with shops" at the address: Moscow, st. Pyatnitskaya, house 82/34, building1. ZANDZ Technical center performed the calculation of lightning protection and grounding and chose the required materials.

 

The installation was implemented by "ZODCHIE SEVERO-ZAPADA" LLC with the use of ZANDZ and GALMAR products.

Task

Calculation of lightning protection and grounding for the Maly theatre of Russia.

Solution

The calculations are made in accordance with the following documents:

  1. The calculations are made in accordance with the following documents: "Electrical Installation Code" EIC 7th ed. (hereinafter - EIC).

  2. "Instructions for organization of lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial communications" IS 153-34.21.122-2003 (hereinafter IS).

  3. "Instructions for lightning protection of buildings and structures" AD 34.21.122-87 (hereinafter - AD).

 

Lightning rods are used for protection of structures from lightning strikes. The lightning conductor usually consists of a lightning rod, intercepting the lightning strike, a down conductor and a ground electrode. All these elements allow to safely drain lightning current into the ground without a damage for the protected object.

The theatre refers to traditional objects from the point of view of lightning protection in accordance with IS and to the third category of lightning protection in accordance with AD.

Description of external lightning protection system of the Maly theatre of Russia

The set of measures to provide the required lightning protection is offered by the following solutions:

  1. 11 km from the protected building there is a 30-m-high building, it will be a lightning rod in relation to the protected building.

  2. Installation of two lightning rods, each 4 m high is additionally carried out. They are fixed to the prominences on the roof.

  3. Down conductors with the use of copper-bonded wire D=8 mm, which are connected with to the artificial ground electrode are put along the roof perimeter at the distance of not less than 25 m. The lightning rods are also interconnected to arrange two down conductors from each lightning rod. Fixation of a down conductor to vertical surfaces is carried out with the help of clamps GL-11703A.

  4. Installation of the grounding device, consisting of three vertical electrodes (copper-bonded pins 14 mm in diameter), 3 m long, joined by a horizontal electrode (copper-bonded tape of 30x4 mm) in the form of a triangle. The distance between the vertical electrodes is at least 3 meters, the distance from the horizontal electrode to the building walls - 1 m, the depth - 0.5 m.

Lightning protection calculation in the ZANDZ calculation center

The calculation of lightning protection is carried out in the Calculation center of lightning protectio system reliability and probability of a lightning breakthrough, developed with the use of mathematical calculations by OJSC "Energy institute to the name of G.M. Krzhizhanovksy" (OJSC "ENIN"). The results are summarized in Chart 1.

 

The following source data are taken for the calculation:

The density of lightning strikes into the ground - 4 strikes / sq. km per year.
