This August, we have shared an interview in which the leading engineer for power supply design team of the company answered our questions about the design of grounding and lightning protection. From this interview, we learned some of the features in the work of the designer and the problems that arise in different projects.
These stories, to our mind, are extremely important and help less experienced professionals to learn from the knowledge of their more experienced and enlightened colleagues. In addition, the discussion of problems in the design helps to find solutions even in most complex tasks. That is why we continue to interview designers and publish them on the site www.ZANDZ.com. Today we are glad to present you the second interview.
This time, we talked to the engineer on the electrical part from Construction management - Mizanov Alexander. Alexander works in the representation of the company Thyssen Schachtbau GmbH, in the city of Norilsk, which specializes in the field of mining, construction and manufacturing of industrial equipment and machinery.
Alexander has a 4-year-experience in this position and during that time he had to design lightning protection for a variety of industrial purposes: headstock, engine houses, MDSD (main step down substation), TS (transformer substation), PDS (power distribution substation) etc.
Alexander said that he had to chance to design unusual or complicated facilities yet. In general, the objects "with features", for which it is necessaty to make non-standard projects, do not occur often.
We found it interesting that the department, in which Alexander works, is not in the office, as we used to see, but directly on the construction site to promptly solve all the problems during the installation. Speaking about lightning protection, Alexander said that the choice usually falls towards the proven lightning rods which are easy to install:
What type of lightning rod you use most frequently and why?
-
Lightning protection is oftencarried out by the metal mesh due to the cheapness and ease of installation, but sometimes we have to use masts (eg lightning protection of the main step-down substation of container type)
Have you ever used active lightning protection in the projects?
-
No, we haven't use active lightning protection
The most difficult thing in working as the designer, Alexander, like many of his colleagues, considers achivement of a compromise between the desires of the customer and the regulatory requirements. However, answering the question "Do you often have to deal with the special (impossible / impractical) requirements from the customer," our interlocutor said that their requirements are often justified.
Alexander also shared with us answers to the questions about tools and means with the help of which he carries out his work:
How does the design of lightning protection and grounding start?
-
Design of LP/G always begins with an update of knowledge in the field of regulations and requirements.
What tools do you use for the calculation?
-
My tools are - head, calculator and AD on the calculation of lightning protection.
What resources, including those on the Internet, you use for calculations / design?
-
Mainly StroyKonsultant to find the most recent editions of the regulatory documents.
In addition to studying and learning the design and installation of grounding and lightning protection, the project ZANDZ.com is also engaged in the manufacture of products designed to create high-quality grounding devices. Of course, we are very interested in the fact that the products would meet not only all existing regulatory requirements, but also the desires of all those who directly use it - designers, installers, customers. Therefore, we could not help but ask about the experience and cooperation with ZANDZ.com:
What is your experience with ZANDZ.com?
-
We used ZANDZ products - all the buildings at the site are built on pile foundation, to create grounding of the building, we tie pile casings tubes that go into the ground to 20-30 meters, and once we forgot to do that for one building. Then we used the products of this company, there were absolutely no problems - we assembled, measured and passed to the customer.
When we asked Alexander about the current and future projects, he said that he is now involved in the design and construction of pithead buildings of two hoses, but in the future he would be interested to take part in the construction of a power station or even a nuclear power plant. In our turn, we are ready to provide assistance in the design of grounding and lightning protection partition to Alexander.
This material is based on a written reply to the list of questions about the design of grounding and lightning protection. Answers are provided at no charge.
