Correct choice of an SPD has always been a hard task. Today, a catalog of SPDs in a modern actively working company is typically a multi-page book of a large format. You should be able to correctly assess the main parameters of a protective device and its compatibility with the protected electrical circuit. The design also plays an important role. At modern industrial facilities, SPDs have to be installed in fire hazardous premises, in aggressive chemical environments and at high pressures. All this should be considered by the designer.
