The task was as follows:
Make a lightning protection system of a church, as well as a ground loop for the church and a household building. A grounding device for the grounding and lightning protection was made separately. Two offering options were needed: one on the basis of electrolytic ZZ-100-102MB grounding kits and the other on the basis of a ZZ-000-030 modular grounding kit.
Building dimensions:
- Length: 36.9 m;
- Width: 24.4 m;
- Wall height from the ground level: 15.5 m;
- Ridge height from the ground level: 42.5 m.
The church has a complex shape of the roof with a cross and a dome on it. The roof is made of copper. The building also has 20 rain pipes arranged on the facade.
Soil type: sand.
Calculations were performed in accordance with PUE 7th ed., SO 153-34.21.122-2003 "Instructions for lightning protection of buildings, structures, and industrial communications" (hereinafter SO) and RD 34.21.122-87 "Instruction for the lightning protection of buildings and structures" (hereinafter RD).
The church is a normal building in terms of lightning protection according to SO and has Category 3 according to RD.
The protection of buildings against lightning strikes is carried out by lightning rods. A lightning rod is a device that rises above the protected facility to divert the lightning current into the soil without entering the protected facility. In this case, a cross on top of the church will act as a lightning rod.
The two grounding and lightning protection options for the church are described below.
Option 1. Based on ZZ-100-102MB electrolytic grounding.
As the type of soil at the facility is sand with the resistivity equal to 1500 ohm/m, ZANDZ ZZ-100-102MB electrolytic grounding specifically designed for use in high-ohm soils is proposed as a grounding device.
After calculations based on standard documents, technical specifications, and the required values, ZANDZ experts proposed a set of measures to ensure the necessary requirements for the grounding device:
- installing two down conductors using copper-bonded wire D = 8 mm.
- installing ZANDZ ZZ-100-102MB kits electrolytic grounding. The kits are connected using a copper-bonded tape 30x4 mm in cross-section. The tape laying depth is 0.5-0.8 m;
- the electrodes must be placed at a distance at least 6 meters from each other, from the foundations of buildings and other engineering structures.

Option 2. On the basis of ZZ-000-030 modular grounding kit.
The second option is similar to the first one, but more ZANDZ ZZ-000-030 modular grounding kits are needed. The set of measures to ensure the necessary requirements for the grounding device is represented by the following solutions:
- installing two down conductors using copper-bonded wire D = 8 mm.
- installing ZANDZ ZZ-000-030 modular grounding kits. The kits are connected using a copper-bonded tape 30x4 mm in cross-section. The tape laying depth is 0.5-0.8 m;
- the electrodes must be placed at least 6 meters from each other, from the foundations of buildings and other engineering structures.
