Perhaps, everybody could notice the vertical lightning rods, towering over the buildings.
But not everyone knows that metal mesh, located on the roof, can be used as a lightning rod.
In fact, these two systems are equal and equally effective.
Let us consider two options on the example of lightning protection of asingle-family house (cottage)
The first option - with rod lightning rods:
The roof of the building is equipped with two rod lightnign rods (2 meters high), the are placed at the edges of the roof ridge. The lightning rods are fixed to the wall with the special clamps. Copper-bonded wire is used as down conductors (D=8 mm). Rod lightning rods are connected with the same wire.
The second option - with lightning protection mesh:
Lightning protection mesh is placed on the roof of the building- copper-bonded wire (D = 8 mm). The cross section of the wire is not chosen by chance. The wire of such a section can withstand a powerful lightning strike and divert it into the ground without damaging the roof. A conductor is laid along the perimeter of the roof slopes.
The same copper-bonded wire is used for the organization of two down conductors (D=8 mm).
Both systems are working and are equally effective. However, many customers of lightning protection systems are worried that rod lightning rods do not fit into the selected design of the structure. In this case, they make a choice in favour of lightning protection mesh, which perfectly "hides" from the customer's view.
The volume of work may be another selection criterion. For example, it is cheaper and faster to install two rod lightning rods (but not always) than to pay off the wire and put it in the form of a mesh with the desired pitch.
