Over the years, we have protected hundreds of buildings of traditional design and many site facilities from lightning. Each project is unique, but it is not always possible to tell about those that really stand out. Now we have such a chance.
The aviary with snow goats at the Moscow zoo is perhaps the most interesting object that we protected. In this aviary, a mountain acts as a shelter for goats: it is quite high, so there is a risk that it will have a lightning strike. An air terminal was installed on top of it, the down conductors were hidden in the steps and connected to the ground electrode laid at the foot. The lightning protection and grounding measures described sound familiar, but look interesting, see the photos below.
We not only developed lightning protection for the aviary with goats, but also implemented it together with our partner, the company Groundz, from which we received a letter of gratitude for help in developing design solutions and quick delivery of materials.

Task
To calculate lightning protection and grounding of the aviary for goats at the Moscow Zoo.
Solution
The calculations of lightning protection of the aviary are made in accordance with the following documents:
- Electric Installation Code EIC 7-th ed.;
- IS 153-34.21.122-2003 «Instruction to lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial communications» (hereinafter IS);
- AD 34.21.122-87 «Instruction on arrangement of lightning protection for buildings and structures» (hereinafter AD).
Lightning rods are used to protect structures from lightning strikes. A lightning rod consists of a lightning rod, intercepting a lightning discharge, a down conductor and a ground electrode. All these elements allow you to safely drain lightning current into the ground without damage to the protected object.
The aviary belongs to ordinary objects from the point of view of lightning protection in accordance with IS and to the 3rd category according to RD.
Description of the aviary lightning protection system
A set of measures to ensure the necessary requirements to lightning protection system is represented by the following solutions:
- Installation of one rod lightning rod 4 m high on the wall. It is taken into account that 0.7 m of the rod length goes to the fixation.
- 2 down conductors made of copper-bonded steel wire with a diameter of 8 mm are laid from the lightning rods to two grounding devices.
- The down conductors are mounted (installation step 0.6-1 m):
- To the wall with the help of GL-11703A clamp;
A set of measures to ensure the necessary requirements for the grounding device is represented by the following solutions:
- Installation of 2 grounding devices consisting of a horizontal electrode 4.5 m long (copper-bonded steel tape with a cross-section of 4x30 mm), depth is 0.5 meter and 2 vertical electrodes (copper-bonded steel rods with a diameter of 14 mm) 3 m long .
- Connection of vertical and horizontal electrodes to each other is carried out using ZZ-005-064 clamp.
- Connection of down conductor with the output of the copper-bonded tape out of the ground is carried out using GL-11562A control clamp.
