Webinar 1.  "Zonal concept of lightning protection”
(was held on 02 March 2016 11:00 Moscow time)

Modern lightning protection system is intended not only for the protection of the protected object from a direct lightning strike, but it should also possess qualities, restricting indirect effects of lightning current onto the object:

  • by the reduction of electromagnetic field value in the zone of the protected space formed at the expense of electromagnetic pulse impact LEMP, caused by lightning current flowing (LightningElectromagneticPulse) at a direct discharge into the object and during a discharge in its close vicinity;
  • by the restriction of voltage and current pulses flowing into the stored object by electro-conductive systems, that is along electro-feeding and signal cables, metal pipes and structures.

To realize this target, new measures are now used. They are concentrating on the shielding of buildings, premises and cable tracks, and also on the protection from surges caused by lighting current used as a measure of potential equalization of working cable cores by restricting surges.
The most optimal for this task implementation was Zonal Lightning protection Concept, which was published in IEC 62305 - Protection from atmosphere electricity.
The target of the webinar is to advance the mechanisms of forming the effects of lightning current influence on modern objects and also view of the method of diving the object to lightning protection zones LPZ 0A, LPZ 0B, LPZ 1, LPZ 2 etc.

Webinar 2. "Surge protection for power lines 230/400 V 50 Hz, part 1.
"Zonal lightning protection concept "

(was held on 23 March 2016 at 11:00 Moscow time)

A skilful use of protection from pulse surges allows to reduce the risk of object damage hit by lightning to an acceptable minimum. In this case, separately used protective elements (arresters, variable resistors and diods), as a rule, are not able to restrict overvoltages to a safe level on their own and there is a need to unite their positive parameters in protective circuits (SPD) consisting of different types of surge arresters.

The task of the first meeting on the topic "Surge protection of power lines 230/400 V 50 Hz" not to show scientific researches, which have a right to exist, but see the whole diversity of the existing protective means, study practical parameters, which a designer needs to have to build an efficient and reliable surge protection system.
Understanding the differences between these devices will make us better prepare for the next webinars on the topic "Surge Protection".

Webinar 3. "Surge protection for power lines 230/400 V 50 Hz, part 2
(was held on 30 March 2016 at 11:00 Moscow time)

Knowing that recently there appeared many offers in the sphere of surge protection devices on the market, everybody thinks what to choose for a certain object type. An attentive designer will notice that only a limited number of manufacturers offer SPDs performed on the base of gas-filled hermetic arresters.
The majority of manufacturers are not able to make such devices and they offer SPDs based on varistor technology only.
Unfortunately, varistors are not able to reject the large part of energy of partial lightning currents and they can't be used as SPDs on the borders of exteriour lightning protection (LPZ OA / LPZ n and LPZ Oв / LPZ n, where n ≥1)

During the webinar, we will see the element base of surge protection devices for a power line 230/400 V 50 Hz produced by the German company LEUTRON, which are unique in physical properties and electrical parameters. The presentation will include an overview of high-quality surge protection devices intended for separate protection categories: I, II and III, and integrated SPDs that meet the requirements of two or three protection classes at once: I/II, II/III, I/II/III, both single pole and multipole, for certain types of networks (TNC, TNS, TT). Such diversity and university of devices allows to avoid the use of integrated inductivities between the SPD classes in power supply networks, gives the chance to mount SPD before electrical energy meters (very low keakage currents of gas-filled clippers) and signalization of damage of all protection classes, including elements of the 1 category. It means very flexible use of LEUTRON company products in designer's every day work and high reliability of surge protection circuits even in case of a direct lightning strike into the protected object.
We will also offer examples of choosing voltage limiting circuits and surge currents in power supple networks 230/400 V 50 Hz of different construction facilities.

Webinar 4. "Surge protection for low-voltage lines (signaling, control, data transfer, telephone lines, etc.), part 1
(was held on 06 April 2016 at 11:00 Moscow time)

Equipment, used in low signal level systems, for example:

  • in data transmission, measurement and control systems,
  • in automation and signalization systems,
  • in the systems of burglar or fire alarms,
  • in warning and control systems,
  • in video surveillance systems,
  • in radio communication systems,

as a rule, is characterized by the low level of electromagnetic resistance from the side of their signal interfaces. First of all, it is connected wit the use of a greater number of electronic circuits, sensitive to electromagnetic disturbances in such systems. Overvoltages appearing in the result of a lightning strike or caused by disturbances in power line networks are especially dangerous for such devices. They can bring to damage or even complete destruction of electronic devices. Corresponding losses do not only refer to the material sphere (need of repair or change of equipment), but they usually induce additional expenditures, connected with the loss of the system functionality, which includes a damaged module or a whole electronic device, which, in the result, brings to the loss of the company's reputation, due to its downtime.

To provide high reliability of different types of low current systems working in the conditions characterized by the significant level of electromagnetic disturbances, it is necessary to use surge protection circuits (SPD), chosen according to the standard of the protected interface and also the expected level of disturbances (partial lightning currents or induced overvoltage currents). Such SPDs should limit overvoltages to the safe levels, stood by the protective device without a loss of normal functional properties of this system.

The presentation will include examples of protection at the existing low-voltage systems considering the principles of the zonal protection concept according to the requirements of IEC 62305 series of standards.
