Why Is the Thickness of Copper Coating So Important for Grounding Rods?

The primary advantage of the copper-plated grounding rod is its strong, thick copper coating that ensures protection of the steel core against corrosion.

The standard GOST R IEC 62561.2-2014 specifies the minimum thickness of the copper layer for rods used in vertical ground terminal — 250 mcm. The copper layer purity is 99.9%. A method of applying the coating is not regulated but reliable adhesion with the main material is required. The greatest adhesion strength (at a molecular level) is provided by electrodeposition.

During the rod installation into the ground, its coating is subjected to high mechanical loads. Stones and other hard elements in the soil may damage it. What reduces this risk is the application technique and the thicker copper coating. Quality coating allows to ensure the service life of the grounding rod not less than 30 years in aggressive soils and up to 100 years in ordinary soils.

When purchasing, it is important to pay attention to the thickness of the coating on grounding rods because it is easier to buy rods with a coating of 100 mcm rather than 250 mcm. Its insufficient thickness may deprive the grounding of all the advantages that copper plating technology offers. A coating with 2.5 times less thickness is not able to provide reliable corrosion protection in complex soils. The life of the ground terminal is drastically reduced, depriving the electrical installation of safety and sensitive equipment of the ability to operate normally.

The ZANDZ ZZ-001-065 copper-plated grounding rod is made of a high-strength steel with a copper coating having 99.9% purity and thickness of 250 mcm that has been electroplated. The rod diameter is 14 mm, and the length is 1.5 m. To connect the rods to each other, the end faces are threaded with UNC 5/8 threads by knurling. We have taken into account all nuances to create long-lasting grounding for any purpose.

Copper-plated rods are used in ready-to-use sets of ZANDZ modular grounding which contain all the required elements to install the grounding electrode.
