The rolling sphere method is very simple, that's why it's attractive. To determine the protection zone, you have to roll a sphere (in your mind) of a specified radius around the lightning rod. The space under the sphere trace is considered to be protected. Despite this simplicity, we have to assure designers to stop rolling such an easily rolled sphere.
In the video, Professor Eduard Meerovich Bazelyan explains:
- the rolling sphere method;
- how to calculate the protection zone according to the rolling sphere method;
- specifics and drawbacks of the method
