Lightning protection of a mining farm in a metal container

Mining means crypto-currency production, most often bitcoins. Computers process information, and the owner gets rewarded for this. Such process requires stable operation of the equipment and reliable lightning protection. Such facilities are classified as special types according to the regulatory documents and require installation of standalone lightning arresters. The ZANDZ Technical Center has received a request to calculate the lightning protection for a mining farm in a metal container. Let us continue with more detailed review of our offered solution.

Task: To calculate the lightning protection system for the mining farm in a metal container

Solutions to meet the requirements to the lightning protection system of the mining farm in a metal container are:

  1. The lightning protection is made in accordance with the Electrical Installations Code (EIC), Rev. 7, SO 153-34.21.122-2003 "Guidelines for the lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial infrastructure" (hereinafter referred to as SO) and RD 34.21.122-87 "Guidelines for the lightning protection of buildings and structures" (hereinafter referred to as the RD).
  2. The facility is classified as a special one according to SO. The system's reliability should be at least 0.999.
  3. A 12-m standalone lightning arrester is installed.
  4. For the lighting arrester, a grounding arrangement is installed as follows:
  • Laying a horizontal ground electrode for current spreading in two directions at 90 degrees between them. The ground electrode is made of a corrosion-resistant steel copper-plated strip with a cross-section of 4 x 30 mm (GL-11075), the laying depth is 0.5 m;
  • in each direction at the distance of 5 m from the lightning arrester, one 3-m vertical electrode is installed;
  • vertical and horizontal electrodes, as well as horizontal electrodes with the interception rod are connected using clamps ZZ-005-064.
