— Let us look at the parameters of these SPDs, there are following nominal voltages: 12 V, 30 V, 36 V, 48 V. Various manufacturers use other elements. In terms of the voltage limitation level, we also can see these are low enough. Why it is important in this case? I remember first time, when I faced those fire alarm circuits, when the lightning strike causes monetary damage in the amount of about 20 thousand euro. The main problem is not the money, in those case firemen who worked in that plant, had no information on what occurred, because of total destruction of the system. The elements we offer for the fire systems, have really good quality and meet the requirements for these systems perfectly.

— For those designers, who prefer selecting SPDs by themselves, in case of various sophisticated systems, we made the RST AL range of surge protection devices. It is the series for the alarm systems, when anybody invades the object. Here we can see RST AL DC range for the low-current lines. RST AL HDC is a high current line. RST AL RS is for data transfer buses protection and RST AL HF, as before, for the high-frequency signals protection. These SPDs are designed for protection of the security alarm and access control systems. These feature a small size, namely, about 10mm of the width by 65mm, or 6.5 cm of the length.

— By looking at the parameters summarized in Table, we can see that installation of these elements is allowed at the boundary of zero and first zones, and further. Limitations for the voltage parameters are very low, that is to say these voltages are thoroughly selected based on the nominals. Should we excess this nominal voltage many times, then the energy crossing above the limitation and reaching the protected circuits, will be high. Limit frequency at the level of 2 MHz to 4 MHz, 5 MHz, which is also shall be noted. However, it is quite insufficient in those systems

— HDC elements in this range are for high-current lines. In this case the nominal current is high - 2.5 kA, it is required where alerting devices are included. It is very important not to forget that alerting device is subjected to the current many times higher when it is actuated, rather than in standby mode. Low resistance provides such a high current. We succeeded in coordination of the first and the second protection steps at very low resistance.

— The next element which will be useful for the designers, it is the element for the RS 485 signal standard to protect serial data transfer in alarm systems. Again, it has very low protective voltage: line – РЕ and line – line. It is very important for those signal standard, because it is the voltage that does exist.

— This element may also be installed at the boundary of the external and internal zone. RST AL HF for higher frequency of up to 75 MHz. If we look at earlier parameters, this frequency was about 2 MHz. Who needs for higher ones, he will find the element required.

— Other type of SPDs. These are necessary protection elements of any CCTV system. There are many configurations for the existing CCTV systems. Everyone remembers, that such systems began with the signal transfer by coaxial cable, therefore we have relevant elements here. Look, this element has BNC connection, but new standards were adapted and we have developed the elements with PoE IP video supply, by means of coaxial 75 Ω BNC-1 connections, and RST Safe, which are large protection circuits for the video surveillance and video control centers. These SPDs allow selection of protection for any CCTV standards whatsoever existing by now, because we worked very hard on it, and you will find such. RST NET and RST CCTV BNC-1 SPDs for those standards have the maximum signal stability. It is important to focus on stability, based on our profound experience, we understand it very clear, that no cheap elements can be installed in that location, but only well proven ones.

— RST NET PoE includes the elements highly demanded on the market. These let higher frequency passing, therefore we do not expect them to provide a high stability. But we worked hard for a long time and succeeded to meet the sixth category of the signal passing, that is to say we may use the systems for the Internet networks protection. They have the impact resistance against the lightning current pulse of 1 kA, 10/350 µs. Generally, we deal with 500 A and the maximum pulse of 8/20 µs 2.5 kA. It is clear, that this element is not so strength as earlier ones. It is the connection, that limits the level of these currents, because the strength of such connection is low.

— RST CCTV BNC-1 is well-known standard which is proven one. It has high impact strength of 20 kA and 2.5 kA with the pulse of 10/350 µs, which is the peak for the design like that. In terms of the limit frequency of 70 MHz, it allows perfect video signals transmission through a coaxial cable. The element is made of aluminum, it means that these elements do not generate, not transmit the pulses outside, and if the protection is provided inside, there is no shielding function.

— IZOP is for larger protection circuits. What does IZOP stand for? RST Safe NET PoE is intended for protection of one to ten lines, with 19-inch enclosure, the height of 1U and made of stainless steel. RST Safe CCTV BNC for one to 10 lines, 75 Ω in the same enclosure. RST Safe CCTV/P represent modular elements, which you have seen with other enclosure designs, for the protection from 1 to 19 lines of the twisted pair or 9 video + camera control cables.

Zone Overvoltage Protection (ZOP) is a circuit designed for installation at certain boundary between LPZ zones (for example, external building wall – boundary of LPZ 0/1) or directly near to the protected hardware (e.g. LPZ 1/2), which one enclosure includes SPD protecting all lines (power supply and signal lines) crossing the zone boundary at relevant point |
— In the third part we will see complete protective circuits, there will be examples showing how deep we worked on them and who relies upon our products and confide us. Naming of all circuits, ZOP refers to Zone Overvoltage Protection, though, its acronym is pronounced easier both in Polish and English. In Russia you call it "UZIP". UZIP is a kind of a general naming, so I'm confused with the use of UZIP name for sophisticated circuits. I wish UZIP to be distinguished somehow, and, with your permission, I will apply it to small protection circuits, which have smaller enclosures, as ones we've just mentioned.

— Example of RST TV overvoltage protection circuit for camera locations. Always such ZOP has one unprotected side, by which the cables are laid externally, and protected one. Look, here the cables perfectly penetrate the box and going out from the opposite side, no returning cables, but here we have only PE cable connection, it is necessary and inevitable. And there are no current influence, that passes outside, it is limited to the ground at that location with unprotected lines. There are standard IP elements, and there are power supply elements, protective elements are supplied by LEUTRON company, which we represent. This is why protection is provided for the power supply circuit and signal lines for that one camera or two cameras, because there are two elements. Our ZOP are always equipped with the power supply circuit damage alarm. In practice we always install variable resistors, and we can make sure of the proper functioning by means of that green window, it indicates that variable resistor is working inside. And if not, the window is off. It is hard to imagine, that someone will ever look inside the box, especially, when it is suspended at the hard-to-access height. Just never.

— We introduced special code identification for the designer's convenience. RST TV refers to the type of the protected circuit. The following identification is the type of the video signals transmission, that is to say, a coaxial cable, twisted pair, Internet + PoE. The following is 230V or 24VDC power supply. Camera motion control is the next parameter. 8С is RST 485 double-cable, 2D is RST 422 also two cables, and 0 is immovable camera. Main enclosure type is UF. F refers to ultraviolet, this code means solar light resistance. S refers to standard enclosure not resistant to continuous radiation.

— The lamp enables a guard to note, if something is wrong with the system or something is lit. This indicates a presence of alarm. Properly trained guard will define the alarm status immediately. It is a simple monitoring method for the limiter with variable resistor installed in the power supply circuit with no need to open the box.

— The following circuit is the alerting device protection by using RST AL. The designer selects its parameters by himself, by knowing the current conducted by the alerting device in question. The manufacturers apply various parameters for that location. Here you can see additional protection, look, one, two, three circuits, three SPDs. Acoustic alarm, visual alarm and sabotage alarm with respect to the box, sabotage is included anywhere. Here and here as well. — Larger circuits, such as central control panels circuits, security alarm system central units. Variously, for example, here we installed cheap LEUTRON elements, and there are many RST elements installed for all signal lines, that are connected to the control unit. The power supply circuits, look on the left, and on the right – protection by LEUTRON elements, that is to say, RST AL SPD is for protection of low-current, high-current and data bus lines, there are three configurations.
