Some principal goals and objectives of the conference are:

  • Analysis of existing problems and prospects of development of lightning protection, both in Russia and abroad;
  • Exchange of experience and the latest scientific achievements between the leading researchers in the operation area;
  • Search for ways and means of modernization and reliability increase of lightning protection systems and methods.

The Science Committee of the Conference included a constellation of eminent experts: D.Sc. Edward M. Bazelyan (ENIN), Yuri A.GORYUSHIN (Rossetti), Ph.D. Alexander Gaivoronskiy (SibNIIE), Ph.D. Alexander G. OVSYANNIKOV (Novosibirsk State Technical University), Oleg Gromov (LLC Engineering Center VITU), Ph.D. George V. PODPORKIN (JSC Streamer NGO), Professor Vladimir Rakov (University of Florida, USA).

More than 150 scientists and experts from Russian and foreign research centers, laboratories and commercial organizations (Russia, USA, China, France, Finland, ...) visited the event. The ZANDZ employees could not miss the important event as well.

The conference reports were divided into sections, so that all participants could listen to and discuss information from the wide range of topics: starting from physics of lightning discharges up to the latest developments in the field of lightning protection systems. The wide range of topics demonstrates relevance of theoretical studies aimed at understanding of dangerous lightning effects, the importance of applied experiments and the experience of modern lightning protection systems and confirms close interrelations of theory and practice.

And one could genuinely admire the lively atmosphere of the conference during those three days. Nearly all reports were easily criticized in a constructive way, while at the same time the reporters selflessly defended their points of view, often showing surprising depth of knowledge and understanding of the discussed topic. We know that truth is borne in a dispute, therefore, the conference profited a lot from such heated discussions. According to Doctor Edward Bazelyan, who participated in all similar events before, this event was the biggest success, had the richest contents and information.

To crown it all it should be pointed out how important and nice it is to be in a group of fellow-thinkers, to be aware of the importance of the tasks we are trying to solve together. The researchers that serious and resolute are sure to approach the day when lightnings will be caught far away from the protected area and their dangerous influence will be eliminated.
