How to arrange lightning protection for a private house?
The correct solution depends on the shape and material of the roof, as well as on the shape of the house.
For private houses, we use:
- Lightning rods;
- Lightning nets.
Let's look at two possible ways of arranging lightning protection in one house. (See Picture)
Option 1: Lightning protection with two lightning rods
Option 2: Lightning protection with an air termination network
Option 1: Set two 2 m high rods at the edges of the roof ridge. Special clamps are used to fix on the wall of the building. For two down conductors, copper-coated wire is used (D=8 mm). Lightning rods are connected with each other with the same wire.
Option 2: An air termination network with copper-coated wire (D=8 mm) is placed on the roof. The conductor is placed along the sloping roof perimeter. Special clamps are used for fixing. For two down conductors, copper-coated wire (D=8 mm) is used.
In both options, a grounding device is used, which consists of three vertical electrodes 4.5 m each joined by a horizontal electrode (copper-coated stripe with cross-section of 30x4 mm). The distance between the vertical electrodes is at least 5 meters, the distance from the horizontal electrode to the walls of the building is 1 m, depth 0.5 m.
In this case Option 1 is better, because there is some space under the overhang for the holders of the lightning rod. Besides, less mounting work is required in the first variant because there are fewer fixing points.
