It's not a secret that a properly executed external lightning protection system is able to protect your home from physical destruction in the result of a lightning strike. But it is not able to protect all devices and appliances at home from damage due to exposure to pulse lightning surges. Special devices - SPDs (the so-called internal lightning protection) are used for this purpose. Properly chosen and installed SPDs are able to take the dangerous overvoltage away, thereby preventing their impact on your equipment.
First of all, we will hold an analysis of all the possible ways of penetration of surge to your devices.
In a general case, the following ones can be highlighted:
- low-voltage power supply network (220/380 V) - in the result of flowing of lightning current over the elements of external lightning protection (and further over the ground electrode);
- low-voltage power supply network (220/380 V) -in the result of a lightning strike into an air line (overvoltage occuring at the switching of high-voltage equipment at the substation can be related here);
- TV signal transmission network;
- data network (Internet);
- other low-voltage networks, providing home services (video surveillance, burglar and fire alarms, etc.).
Low-voltage power supply network protection*
1. The house is equipped with external lightning protection
In this case, the maximum possible impact should be considered - lightning strike into the external lightning protection system itself. Rated lightning current through the SPD - 100 kA (pulse form 10/350 ms).
o protect against this type of threat, you need to place the device in the entrance electrical panel (on the side of the building), that can stand and take such a powerful pulse away. We offer a unique solution - combined SPD of Class 1+2+3**. One such device is sufficient to protect all electrical equipment in the house***.
Depending on how you perform grounding of the protective conductor (TN-C-S or TT scheme), you can select one of the devices suitable for you:
PowerPro BCD TNS 25/100
PowerPro BCD TT 25/100
2. The house is powered by an overhead line ( there is no external lightning protection system)
Maximum possible impact - lightning strike into the overhead power line. Rated lightning current through the SPD - 100 kA (pulse form 10/350 ms).
To protect electricaol equipment against this type of threat, you need to place the device in the entrance electrical panel (on the side of the building), that can stand and take such a powerful pulse away.
If SPD is installed into a switchboard on the wall of a building, the protection circuit is similar to case 1.
If the arrester is installed into a shield on the post, it is not reasonable to use SPD of class 1+2+3, because there can be repeated (induced) strains in the cable on the way from installation site to the protected house. We offer to use SPD of class 1+2**. If the distance from the place of installation of the SPD 1+ 2 to the house is greater than 60 m, an additional SPD of Class 2***.
Depending on how you performed grounding of the protective conductor (TN-C-S or TT scheme), you can select one of the protective schemes suitable for you:
Installation site | TN-C-S scheme | TT scheme |
---|---|---|
1. on branch (on the post) | PowerPro BC TNS 25/100 |
PowerPro BC TT 25/100 |
2. at the enterance of the building (if the distance from the installation site of the SPD 1+2 is greater than 60 m) | EnerPro C TNS 275 |
EnerPro C TT 275 |
3. The house is powered by an underground cable (no external lightning protection system)
The maximum possible impact - induced surge voltages, getting of a partial lightning current into the network is excluded****. Rated surge current through the SPD - up to 40 kA (pulse form 8/20 ms).
To protect the electrical equipment from this type of threat, you need to place a device on the entrance electrical panel (on the side of the building), that can sustain and take this pulse away - SPD of class 2***.
Depending on how you perform grounding of the protective conductor (TN-C-S or TT scheme), you can select one of the devices suitable for you:
TN-C-S scheme | TT scheme |
---|---|
EnerPro C TNS 275 |
EnerPro C TT 275 |
Notes
* In all the studied cases it is assumed that a three-phase input is made in the house, rated voltage of 220 V.
** Read more information about SPD classification at the link..
***If you have particularly sensitive equipment, it is possible to install additional SPDs of class 3 into the nearest local switchboards or to use SPDs of class 3, built into a power outlet.
**** A situation when the entry to the building is carried out by an underground cable, but the distribution of electricity from TP is carried over overhead lines is not referred to this case. This situation is equivalent to the one, studied in p.2..
Advantages of the offered SPDs
Combined SPDs of class 1+2+3 provide protection both against lightning current and induced surges.
- Quick and easy installation, modular design;
- lightning current limit up to 100 kA (10/350 ms);
- very low limit voltage from 0.75 kW to 1.0 kW (is suitable for protecting even the most sensitive equipment);
- o leakage currents - can be installed in front of the meter;
- maximum reliability;
- parameters independent from pressure and humidity;
- no blow hole - it is not required to maintain the permissible distance to other devices;
- great overvoltage withstand.

Protection of television and computer equipment
1. Analog, digital and / or satellite TV
If there is a lightning rod on the roof of your house (especially if its functions are performed by a mast on which there is a TV antenna), it should be taken into account that the partial lightning current can flow in the TV signal transmission network. In this case, the equipment (e.g., TV) may be damaged even if it is protected from the power supply side. Moreover, this situation could cause fire or even explosion of the equipment, which results in much greater losses and the health risk of residents.
To eliminate these risks, it is necessary to install a special protective device into the TV signal transmission circuit. You can select one of the two devices, depending on the type of the signal:
Analog TV | Digital / satellite TV |
---|---|
DataPro Radio/TV |
DataPro SAT |
2. Data transmission networks (Internet)
The Internet is extremely sensitive to various disturbances and overvoltages. The smallest similar exposure can lead to data loss and even damage of the equipment. To protect yourself from these troubles, we recommend to install a specialized SPD into the network.

3. Other systems (video surveillance, burglar and / or fire alarm system,
"smart home")
Low-voltage management, data transmission and control networks are widely used in the listed systems. These networks are very sensitive to even small in value and duration overvoltages. Besides, protective devices used in them should not modify the quality and reliability of the whole system operation (should not distort the signal). That is why, their protection should be treated with special care.
Our technical center is always ready to help you with this and offer a customized solution of the task.
