LIGHTNING PROTECTION OF A HORSE-RIDING ARENA

The ZANDZ Technical Center performed lightning protection calculations for a horse-riding arena located on the territory of a sports and recreation complex. Livestock buildings necessarily require the right lightning protection system. In accordance with table 1 of AD 34.21.122.-87 they must be protected according to category III. In accordance with IS 153-34.21.122-2003, the object refers to ordinary with protection level III, the reliability of protection is 0.9.

Task

To calculate lightning protection of a horse-riding arena.

Solution

Calculations of lightning protection are made in accordance with the following documents:

1. "Electric Installation Code" EIC 7th ed. (hereinafter - EIC).
2. "Instructions for organization of lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial communications" IS 153-34.21.122-2003 (hereinafter IS).
3. "Instructions for lightning protection of buildings and structures" AD 34.21.122-87 (hereinafter - AD).

Lightning arresters are used for protection of structures from lightning strikes. A lightning arrester usually consists of a lightning rod, intercepting the lightning strike, a down conductor and a ground electrode. All these elements allow to safely drain lightning current into the ground without a damage for the protected object.

Description of the external lightning protection system of the horse-riding arena

The set of measures to provide the required lightning protection is offered by the following solutions:

1. Installation of 6 rod lightning rods 10 m high, mounted to the wall. It was taken into account that 2 m of the height of the air terminal is taken for fixation.
2. The metal frame of the building is used as a down conductor in accordance with clauses 1.6 and 2.12 of the AD.
3. Down conductors are laid from copper-bonded wires with the diameter of 8 mm, which are mounted on the roof to vertical surfaces using зажимов GL-11703A clamps and connected to a metal frame using clamps зажимов ZZ-005-064.

The set of measures on the provision of the necessary requirements to the grounding device is presented by the following solutions:

1. Installation of a grounding device consisting of a horizontal electrode (galvanized tape with the cross-section of 4x30 mm), 0.5 meter deep, laid as a contour around the building 1 m from the walls.
2. In accordance with clause 2.13 of the AD, a contour without installation of vertical electrodes is enough.
3. The connection of horizontal electrodes with each other, as well as with columns at least 20 m around the perimeter, is carried out using clamps ZZ-005-064.

The layout of elements in the lightning protection system and the grounding device is shown in Figure 1. Protection zone corresponds to the reliability 0,9 of IS.
