INFOGRAPHICS: CONNECTION OF SURGE PROTECTION DEVICES (SPD)

Lightning surges caused by lightning can damage electronic equipment in the building. For electronics, a direct lightning strike into a house or an overhead line going to it, is dangerous, as well as a close atmospheric discharge.

Full protection against surges can be provided by a cascade of SPDs. We talked about the principle of operation of surge protection devices, their main parameters and selection criteria at the webinar “What the SPDs are for”. Our infographics will help you refresh the basic principles of using these devices.

SPD of class 1 helps to protect against surge overvoltage during direct lightning strikes, SPDs of class 2 , are installed in the distributing switchboards, and SPDs of class 3. are installed immediately in front of the protected electronic equipment. This is a generalized way of placing surge protection devices. Other methods may be used depending on the specific electricfal network circuit and the size of the facility.

A close lightning strike is less dangerous for electronic equipment and can mainly bring induced overvoltages. Alas, it is impossible to predict where lightning will strike - directly into or near an object. It means that the protection circuit using the SPDs remains the same as described above. SPDs of classes 1, 2 and 3 are installed one after another at different sections of the electrical network of the facility.
