What should be done if the distance between down conductors is larger than recommended?

The Assistance and Questions page is continuously updated with new questions on the installation of grounding and lightning protection. And, of course, our technical experts are happy to help you by answering them. We believe that a joint discussion of the question is helpful not only for those who asked it, but also for those who have any connection to grounding and lightning protection. That is exactly why we suggest that you take part in discussing vital questions on our website!

One of the recent questions (link):

According to SO 153-343.21.122-2003 the distance between down conductors for category-3 lightning protection should be 20 m. At the site, part of the building stands on supports 29 m apart, which violates the requirements of SO 153-343.21.122-2003. What should be done in this case?

down conductors

Answer:

In this case there is very limited choice: if the construction allows for it, then an additional down conductor should be installed on its facade or wall. It is should be mounted in such a way that average distance between them works out to 20 meters. The distance recommended by SO 153-343.21.122-2003 is an average, so the requirements would not be violated.
