Thunderstorm activity in the Southern seaboard regions is much higher than in the major part of the country, that is why implementation of lightning protection for new build construction projects is very relevant.
The ZANDZ Technical Center received a request for the development of lightning protection system for a sea port. Below we will study the solution we prepared.
The arrangements were fulfilled in compliance with:

EIC 7th ed (Hereinafter - EIC);
-
IS 153-34.21.122-2003 "Instructions for lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial communications" (hereinafter - IS);
-
AD 34.21.122-87 "Instructions for lightning protection of buildings and structures" (hereinafter AD).
The object refers to the III category of lightning protection. System reliability must be not less than 0,9.
The set of measures to provide the required lightning protection of a sea port is offered by the following solutions:
-
lightning protection of the object is carried out with the help of ridge lightning rods (GL-11521SS), which are fixed with the help of holders GL-11525 and air terminal mast 7 m high (ZZ-201-007-3), which is fixed with the help of holders from the lightning rod kit.
-
steel copper-bonded wire d8 mm (GL-11149) is used as a down conductor.
-
installation of down conductors is carried out with the help of GL-11747A clamp on the roof, GL-11703A - on vertical surfaces. Distance between the clamps- from 0.8 up to 1.0 meter.
-
a universal clamp GL-11551A is used for connecting the mill products along the length and in the nods.
-
All metal elements placed on the roof must be connected to down conductor with the help of clamps GL-11545А. Stairs, handrails are connected with the help of GL-11514N clamp.|
-
connection of lighting protection system is done to the existing system of down conductors and grounding.
-
in accordance with the EIC-7 ed., P.1.7.55 - Grounding devices for protective grounding of electrical installations of buildings and structures and lightning protection of the 2nd and 3rd categories of these buildings and structures, as a rule, should be common.
Results of the calculation carried out with the software developed by the JSC "Energy Institute to the name of G.M. Krzhizhanovsky (JSC "ENIN"):
The density of lightning strikes into the ground - 4 strikes / sq. km per year;
The total number of strikes into the system in: 0.059 (once in 17 years);
The total number of breakthroughs (strikes directly into the object by-passing lightning rods) - 0.0053 (once in 189 years);
System reliability - 0.911.
