The concept of protection zones of rod and catenary wire lightning rods is contained in the officially used Russian regulatory documents on lightning protection. Among them are Instructions on the lightning protection of buildings, structures and industrial communications SO 153-34.21.122-2003 and the Instruction on the lightning protection of buildings and structures РД 34.21.122-87. National lightning protection standards strongly differ from those introduced by the IEM. The major difference is in that the peak of the protection zone is always below the peak of the lightning diverter. The lower the object is located in relation to the lightning rod, the more effectively it will be protected.
